Okay, this may get lengthy so bare with me, those of you who play Minecraft / have played it since early on in it’s development will probably agree with me.
While writing this I am listening to http://www.youtuberepeat.com/watch/?v=Rl1SACrzPF8, with the sounds of spiders slurping running through my head. Remember your first night in Minecraft? You made a mud hut or dug a little cave and set up some torches- or sat there in the darkness, with the sounds of mobs sounding off all around you. The music started playing. It was a beautiful moment- and although you were scared about being blown up or killed, you still wished that it wouldn’t end. It ran at 100+fps on your shitty laptop- but back then you wouldn’t have realized how smooth it was running, you were used to no different.
Every day you were out exploring or gathering materials- “I’m going to build a huge castle!”. You wasted countless hours of your life mining cobble and built your castle, made an epic mine without sticking to any sort of blueprint or plan, you just mined freely. You expanded your castle, made a blacksmith, made a nice gate at the front of it. The whole world was yours to do with what you want. There was no-one else to stop you- to tell you to stop doing something- for that moment- you were completely free.
Eventually you found out how to get onto a multiplayer server- of course back then health didn’t work so you could just spawn items and build epic things. You had lengthy and interesting chats with others on the server. You made friends. You ended up speaking to them through Ventrillo, TeamSpeak or Skype. Those friends you will probably have for the rest of your life.
Everything was fun and easy to do. Hell- after a while you didn’t even need the wiki page open for crafting recipes. Sometimes you’d create a new world to find snow falling from the sky, and the music played.
Let’s compare those magical feelings to what Minecraft is now:
There are villages and npc’s- sure you can turn em’ off, but with them on you can easily find a shelter without having to do any work at all! Night falls? NO PROBLEM! Just plonk down your bed and have a nap. Hell- don’t even worry about remembering your way back to your house because when you die you’ll spawn at your bed! And you know that amazing blocky look- screw that, smooth lighting! Come on Mojang! Polish and polish and polish the game and make it look s3xy! That’s what Minecraft is about, after all! What’s this? Spells? Potions? Experience? Hunger? SURE! IT MAKES IT FEEL MORE FEATURE COMPLETE!
Yes, many of you are going to hate on my opinion. But it’s just that- my opinion. I’ve shed a few tears while writing this. I remember when Minecraft was fun. WAS fun.
Until next time,
